Amethyst is the birthstone for February. It is the purple form of quartz and ranges from very light, sometimes called "Rose d' France", to very dark.

In ancient times, amethyst was believed to prevent drunkenness, and some people even had goblets carved from it!  It was also thought that amethyst would preserve soldiers from harm, give them victory over their enemies, and assist hunters in capturing wild animals.

The more intense the color, the more valuable the Amethyst, unless it gets too dark.  Inky gems are less valuable because they have less life and brilliance.
These  Amethsyts are not as dark as they look here.  Photographing gems is HARD!
